The Benefits of Reading

“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn…” (Rom 12:15)

The cold months of winter were made for curling up with a cup of tea and a good book and of course, Lilly. When I read, Lilly likes to curl up in my lap (on top of a blanket, of course), or right next to my feet on the end of the recliner. She is always curious about what I’m reading – she will give the book a good sniff or two and then lick it a couple of times before giving her approval and settling in next to me. When my mom reads the newspaper, she jumps right in the middle of my mom’s lap and steps on the paper before turning around as if she’s reading, too. Continue reading “The Benefits of Reading”

Is Stubbornness Ever a Virtue?

“Listen to me, you stubborn-hearted, you who are now far from my righteousness. I am bringing my righteousness near, it is not far away; and my salvation will not be delayed…” (Is 46:12-13)

The Struggle of Waiting

“But as for me, I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.” (Mic 7:7)

Lilly stood on all fours on the back of the couch, growling low in her throat and looking toward the door. Her growl grew in intensity until it became a full-fledged bark, almost drowning out the chime of the doorbell. She bounded off the couch and raced to the door, alternately scratching and jumping at the door frame, barking the entire time. I grabbed my bowl of candy off the table near the door, took a deep breath, and opened the door. Continue reading “The Struggle of Waiting”

Comfort in the Pain

Comfort in the Pain

“May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant.” (Ps 119:76)

I heard the screen door open and the mail slot squeak as the mail carrier opened the door to shove the mail through the slot. Lilly barked and charged at the door, grabbing the mail as it came through the slot. She slung the mail across the room and ran head-first into the door as she tried to get to the offender who dared to invade our space. Continue reading “Comfort in the Pain”
