The Reading Slump

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. (Eccl. 3:1)

Have you ever been in a reading slump? This is an extended period of time when you don’t read much. It’s not that you don’t want to read—it’s more that your mind won’t focus. I noticed recently that I’ve been in a reading slump for a couple of months. Even when I have time to read, I would rather watch TV or scroll through my phone—something that doesn’t require too much brain power. Continue reading “The Reading Slump”

Staci’s Super Stocking Stuffer Giveaway

Congratulations to Maggie S. from Traverse City, Michigan, the winner of this giveaway!

Stockings are a tradition in my family, and each time new members join our family, they get their own Christmas stocking made just for them. Each Christmas morning of my childhood, my brother and I would run into the living room to find what Santa had left under the tree. Then we turned to our stockings, which were overflowing with goodies ranging from toothbrushes to small toys to socks to books to gift cards.

I still have that stocking and hang it up every year. My little Yorkie companion, Lilly, has one of her own too, and I stuff it with fun things like dog treats, toys, and a new collar and leash.

This Christmas season, I’m joining The Kids Did It blog and The Mommy Island blog to participate in the Super Stocking Stuffer Giveaway Hop, which runs from November 9, 2021, to November 30, 2021. The winner will receive a signed copy of Death by Dice: A Bunco Club Mystery (my new Christian cozy mystery) and a $15 Amazon gift card.

The Creativity Struggle

But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. (Jer. 10:12)

My word for the year is “create,” but lately, finding the time or energy to create has been a struggle. I believed God gave me this word because he wanted me to create new things this year. I have two book projects along with numerous small projects to complete. I still believe I’m to create new things, but now I also believe he wants me to learn the best ways to do that and to leave behind projects that don’t help fulfill my mission of reaching people for him with the written word.

When I’m busy, when I’m stressed, my creativity dries up. A migraine or exhaustion results, and I know I have to stop and take care of myself. Rather than hurting my productivity and creativity, taking a break rejuvenates me and gives me the strength I need to finish the project at hand. How quickly I forget this when the pressure of a deadline looms! I would do well to remember it. Continue reading “The Creativity Struggle”

Read Books That Renew Your Mind

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Rom 12:2).

Would it surprise you to learn that 26 percent of people didn’t read even part of a book in the last year? As an avid reader, that statistic boggles my mind. Books compete with a host of other forms of entertainment for our attention. If you’re not reading, you’re missing out on some great benefits, including a reduced amount of stress and improved memory and focus.

If that’s not enough proof of why you should be reading, check out this statistic: a study by researchers at the University of Toledo reported that 77 percent of participants who watched more than two hours of TV each night felt significantly more depressed, stressed, and had higher levels of anxiety than those who watched less. How I Became a Reader of Nonfiction

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim 3:16-17)

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to read. However, I haven’t always loved reading nonfiction. As a teenager, I tried to read spiritual growth books, but the few I picked out had messages that seemed to be written for other people. For many years after that, I avoided reading nonfiction, including spiritual growth books.

A few years ago, I noticed a tremendous surge in the number of spiritual growth books on the market, and I decided I was ready to try the genre again. I carefully chose the books I felt I could best apply to my life. Continue reading “How I Became a Reader of Nonfiction”
