Renewal in the Time of COVID-19

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Ps 90:12 (NIV)

Due to the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) around the country, we are faced with continued quarantine and isolation. My calendar, which is usually filled to overflowing, is now clear except for a few work deadlines.

Rather than focusing on the negative, I’m looking for silver linings. I’ve become accustomed to finding lessons in everyday situations in order to write posts for this blog. This situation is so extraordinary that I know God has something for me to learn.

One message I’m hearing loud and clear is that I need to be more selective about how I spend my time. That includes taking better care of myself. My word for the year, renew, comes to mind. Continue reading “Renewal in the Time of COVID-19”

4 Tips for Working from Home

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans” (Prov 16:3).

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread, we practice social distancing. This means businesses and schools have closed, and people are working remotely. For such a busy, social culture, this type of restriction can cause us to feel isolated and alone. We aren’t able to meet our friends in person for coffee or dinner, and we may not see our coworkers for a while.

Over three years ago, I began working from home when I decided to focus on my editing business full time. I thought it would be easy since I’m an introvert, but I didn’t realize how lonely it could be.

Remember, even though it may seem that you’re alone, you’re not. We are all in this together. And perhaps you are literally not alone. You may be surrounded by your family, or your barking dog or clingy cat, all of whom are not used to being cooped up either. Continue reading “4 Tips for Working from Home”

Lessons from Year Three as a Small Business Owner

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” (Prov 16:3)

Time to Rest and Recharge

“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’” (Mk 6:31)

On a recent drive home from visiting my parents, I thought of around five blog post ideas in the span of an hour and half. Because I couldn’t write them down, I dictated them into my phone to transcribe later. Once one idea formed, the rest flowed quickly – so quickly, I felt I almost couldn’t keep up. Developing Deep Roots

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jer 17:7-8)

Most of Oklahoma, but especially the area in southwestern Oklahoma where I grew up, is experiencing extreme drought right now. Less than a year ago, we had one of the wettest summers on record. It rained so much that I couldn’t keep up with the yard work. When it finally stopped raining long enough for me to mow, the thick grass was so tall and wet from the rain that it was hard to get the mower through it. Continue reading “Developing Deep Roots”
