New Year, New You

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Cor. 5:17)

The new year brings with it the promise of a clean slate, with greater things yet to come. Each year as the calendar turns over, we hear refrains of “new year, new you” echoing everywhere—in ads on TV, on the radio, and on social media. Bloggers write about ways you can make changes and make a fresh start as the new year rolls around.

The problem with this is that we don’t leave our problems behind just because the date on the calendar has changed. Difficult situations that we faced on December 31 are still there on January 1. Continue reading “New Year, New You”

Flourish: My Word for 2023

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. (Prov. 19:21)

Many years ago now, I learned about the word of the year challenge through a radio program. I looked into it and decided I wanted to try for myself and see if choosing a word to focus on would help me grow closer to God. It did. Continue reading “Flourish: My Word for 2023”

Saying Goodbye to 2020

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:19).

Finally! We made it to 2021. Most of us can’t leave 2020 and all its discord and chaos behind fast enough. With a new year, we have a clean slate with new goals and resolutions.

But before I move on from 2020, I’d like to look back. Last year, I started a practice where I find three words to describe the previous year. Now, I’m sure you have some choice words for 2020, as we all do, but my words aren’t bye bye bye, even though that would be fitting. Instead, I want to focus on the positive. The truth is, for most of us, 2020 held both good and bad. Continue reading “Saying Goodbye to 2020”

Celebrating Christmas All Year

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness…” (Eph 4:22-24)

The holidays are over, and I’ve taken down all the Christmas decorations and put them away for safekeeping until next year. Each year, this ritual leaves me feeling a little sad, but also a little energized. There’s just something about the joy of the Christmas season that makes me want to leave things out as long as possible, but as much as I enjoy the decorations, I want my house back in order even more. Hope in the New Year

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Cor 5:17)

The new year is a time of renewal, when the rolling over of the calendar brings the opportunity for a fresh start. The slate has been wiped clean, and we all have a chance to write a new story – our story – and make it the best story we can in the coming year. We can leave behind the regrets and mistakes of the previous year. The new year brings something the old year no longer has – hope. Hope for a different outcome, hope that things will be better, hope that relationships will be restored, hope that Jesus will make things right. Continue reading “Hope in the New Year”
