Giving Thanks for the Small Things

“give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thess 5:18).

I carried the container of water to the front of the house, amazed that it was the end of October and still so warm. I poured the water on the pink periwinkles that had spread and taken over the container in which I had planted them. Periwinkles had never grown this well for me before.

I glanced down as a flash of hot pink caught my eye. A lone periwinkle poked its head through the crack in the sidewalk and flourished for all to see. I stopped watering and stared in amazement. Continue reading “Giving Thanks for the Small Things” →

Practicing Gratitude

“Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods.” (Ps 95:2-3)

Being grateful isn’t something that comes naturally. We’re inherently selfish and focused on ourselves. We don’t always feel thankful. There are a lot of bad things happening in this world, and it’s sometimes hard to figure out how to be thankful in the midst of them.

Learning to be grateful takes practice. When faced with a trial or an unexpected bump in the road, my first thought is never how thankful I am for the difficulty or inconvenience. How I wish it were! Turning my mind from my struggles and onto the things for which I’m thankful allows me to grow closer to God and to receive physical and psychological benefits. Reflections on Year 4

When my friend and I started Prestige Prose, our online professional editing service, back in 2015, my goal was to run the business full time someday. But to be honest, I wasn’t sure if that could be a reality. I knew people who edited or wrote as a side hustle but not full time.

Embracing the Lessons of 2020

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Ps 18:2)

This last year has been quite a roller coaster ride. Last month marked one year since my mom fell and broke her kneecap. When the orthopedist told us an injury like hers could take up to six months to get better and a year to heal completely, I thought, That surely isn’t right. Praying the Psalms for Encouragement

“But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.” (Ps 39:7)

My spiritual discipline for 2020 is prayer, and what a year of prayer it has been! From global issues like COVID-19 to national issues such as racial disparities and the election to personal issues like community, I’m learning to “pray continually” (1 Thess 5:17). But sometimes, situations are overwhelming, and words are hard to find. When that happens, I use prayer prompts I find online or in a Bible study plan. Often those prompts are from the Psalms.
