“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Cor 10:31
As I look back over 2018, I’m repeatedly drawn to my health goals. My goal was simply to be healthier. It was a pretty broad goal, to be sure, and I realize now that I wasn’t specific enough in how I wanted to reach that goal. Many of the health problems I experienced in 2018 could have been prevented. Some were caused by pushing myself too hard. I worked even when I was sick, rarely taking a day off, which leads to more illness and potential burnout. I also struggled with seasonal depression more than usual, so this year, I’m taking steps to combat that issue. You can read all about it here in my recent blog post.
Migraines have long been a source of frustration and lost productivity for me. Late in 2018, I tried the Neurolens, a new technology that blocks blue light and helps with eye strain. The number of migraines I had been experiencing decreased, and any migraine I had could be attributed directly to something else such as overexertion or a disruption in my sleep schedule. Even after staring at a computer screen all day, my eyes aren’t as tired as they used to be at the end of the day.
Last summer, I injured my shoulder working in my flower bed, and I dealt with shoulder pain off and on for almost six months. I now place my laptop on a stand and use a wireless keyboard and mouse. This did two things: 1) it lifted my laptop to eye level so that I wouldn’t have to strain at an unnatural angle to see the screen, and 2) I could now type at a more natural angle as well. The use of the laptop stand, wireless mouse, and Neurolens have combined to improve my posture while at the computer, leading to less neck and shoulder pain.
The Bible is a great source of inspiration for ways to live a healthy lifestyle. The Daniel fast, a popular diet, is a result of the diet adhered to by Daniel in the Old Testament. Jesus and his disciples provide a great example as well. They walked everywhere, ate lots of fish, and stayed connected to each other and to God.
As 2019 continues, I plan to be intentional about making choices to guard my mental health and improve my physical health. Taking care of myself means I’ll carve out time to study my Bible, pray, and actually listen for God’s response. I’ll have more energy and stamina to read my Bible and understand the deeper meanings God has for me. I’ll also be able to run my business, meet up with friends, and take my dog Lilly for the walks she loves so much. In 1 Corinthians 6:19, we’re told that our “bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.” It’s my responsibility to take care of my mind and my body while here on earth. Jesus will give me the wisdom to make decisions that will have the greatest impact on my overall health.
Dear Jesus, thank you for opportunities to look back and make changes to improve. Help me to make my health a priority so that I’m able to stay connected to you and do the work you have for me. Amen.
