Fall has long been my favorite season. As a child, I looked forward to the first day of school when I would see my friends again. The sport I enjoyed most—basketball—started in the fall.

When I look back over the last few years of my life, I see how far God has asked me to move out of my comfort zone. I started my own business, moved to a new city, joined a new church, and led a regional writing organization. But just when I think I’ve stretched as far as I can go, God asks me to do even more. We know that our time on earth is short, but we live in a culture that works hard to deny the aging process. But the fact remains that we don’t know when the end will come, and death is no respecter of persons.
This hit home for my family earlier this summer when my mom’s middle brother, David, passed away. She’s lost three of her five brothers in the last four years. Uncle David needed bypass surgery for a blockage in his heart. His body wasn’t strong enough to recover from the surgery, and he died at the hospital a week later.
